The Minor Adjustment Beauty Salon by Alexander McCall Smith

The Minor Adjustment Beauty Salon by Alexander McCall Smith

This novel in The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series is the fourteenth, set in Gabrone, Botswana, and again centers around the life of Mma Precious Ramotswe and with the lives of her friends. These books are gentle and heartwarming, with a few minor mysteries thrown in, and I enjoyed reading this book.

As the book opens, the air is heavy and oppressive before the rains. Mma Grace Makutsi, the secretary assistant detective associate detective with Mma Ramotswe, and her husband, Phuti Radiphuti, are expecting their first child. A lawyer asks the The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency to see if a young man, an heir in his uncle’s will, is indeed the heir in question. A new beauty salon opens up, but the owner is troubled by problems, and Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni, the owner of Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors and Mma Ramotswe’s husband, starts to wonder if he should be more of a modern husband.

This book has a few more twists and turns than usual, and I think it is a wonderful addition to the series.
