I first read this book many years ago (pre-1999), and was happy to find this huge annotated edition. And I am very happy to have it in my library.

With no Saints today, we can recall the events of this day in 1961, when United States military naval transports under the command of the CIA landed thirteen hundred Cuban exile ground troops at Playa Girón in the BahÃa de Cochinos (Bay of Pigs) on the southern coast of Cuba in a failed attempt to overthrow the Communist government of Fidel Castro.

In this twenty-second book of the series about Jim Qwilleran, former crime reporter and current column writer for the local paper (and inheritor of a vast fortune), he and the cats (Koko and Yum Yum, both Siamese) are living in Pickax City in September, which is late in the fall four hundred miles north of anywhere. This was a good addition to the series.

With no Saints to honor, today is Tax Day, being the day when tax returns for the previous year (statements about income taxes) are due to the federal government from United States citizens, resident aliens, and certain nonresident aliens. Today is is Jackie Robinson Day, and we note that today is the annual Boston Marathon, the world’s oldest annual marathon and one of the world’s most prestigious road racing events. And today is the birthday of Richard’s niece Jenny, one of the daughters of his Sister Susan in Iowa.
